Sick Days

Sick Days with a Toddler (www.roastedmontreal.com)Last week was a tough one.  We thought we’d escaped Bastien getting sick until we got the dreaded call from daycare.  I hate those calls.  I always fear the worst and get this sick feeling in my stomach every time I see their name come up on the phone.  Alas, Bastien was sick.

I showed up to pick him up and of course he proceeded to puke in the car with seconds (SECONDS) before we hit our driveway.  Isn’t that just how it goes.

The next few days were filled with buckets, sleep, TV time, gatorade/electrolytes (which I called magic juice to make it sound more enticing) and peering out the window at the snow that was accumulating on our car.

Sick Days with a Toddler (www.roastedmontreal.com)On the last day, I decided to test the firetruck cake pan a friend had lent me.  Of course, Bastien wanted to help.

Sick Days with a Toddler (www.roastedmontreal.com)Sick Days with a Toddler (www.roastedmontreal.com)It was a little activity we could do together.  I consulted my friend Janice of Kitchen Heals Soul and she recommended this chocolate cake which turned out fab.  I made the frosting with 2% greek yoghurt instead of sour cream, because that’s what I had on hand.  It worked perfectly fine.  Well, the cake stuck and came out in bits, but it still tasted good and that’s why we do test runs.

How do you handle the days when your kids are sick??  Any tricks or tips?

I know – the daycare call is the worst. Yes – all better now! It just needs to warm up and we need to get some fresh air!

Good on you for keeping a cool head and managing so well. I’m not looking forward to my little bug’s first sick days. He has his first vaccinations in two weeks, so that probably won’t be fun. :-/ We’ll try to get a good night’s sleep the night before, but sadly, you can’t always plan for sick days…
