Good Food Market

I was delighted to have recently been invited to the first Good Food Market put on by the NDG Food Depot.  Every Friday from 2pm – 7pm the Good Food Market will be held outdoors and will be offering a variety of produce to the entire community including local, organic, ‘ugly’ fruit & veg and seasonal products at the best possible prices.

Located at 2146 Marlowe (next to the big church – you can’t miss it), the market is a fantastic community event that also offers great food, workshops, kid’s activities, music and more.

The vibe is really great and you can tell that the NDG Food Depot has a strong program and volunteer community.  Everyone is happy and motivated and the inaugural event was very well organized.

I took Alex along (that’s me above trying to carry him, pull a plastic bag out of his hands, carry two bags and have a friendly chat) and we had a great time as well as picking up some fresh fruits and vegetables for the entire family.  I also got to try out some Malaysian style asparagus prepared by Chef Nantha and a fantastic roasted banana popsicle.

I strongly suggest you come by to sit on a picnic bench, have a few delicious eats, chat with the volunteers, buy some local fruit and veg, check out the vendors and imagine community markets they way they once were.  It is a lovely way to spend a Friday afternoon and is open to everyone.  Just don’t come expecting an Atwater or Jean-Talon Market.  There are only a few tables of fruits and vegetables but it’s all that you need for a seasonal and local food experience.  We’ve picked up local asparagus, garlic scapes, rhubarb, fresh baked bread, potatoes and swiss chard just to name a few items.  Some weeks there will even be Alvéole which sells honey sold by the borough it is cultivated in.

And a super huge congrats to NDG Food Depot Executive Director Daniel Rotman and not just for bringing his 6 week old twins along to the market.  My idea of a food depot was completely blown out of the water when I learned about everything that the NDG Food Depot was doing from workshops to community meals to this fantastic market.  It really felt like such a strong community event and there was such a positive atmosphere.  It really was uplifting.

It’s really great – I’ve been twice – but I just want to reiterate that it is tiny.. just a couple tables. But, it has great local food and a great vibe. I recommend it!

Lovely blog! Found my way here via the NDG Food Depot posting. We went with our 19 month-old. He slept through it, but next time we’ll have dinner together, too. Can bring a blanket as there is lots of room on the grass, access to bathrooms inside etc.
