Restaurant Sumac in St-Henri

I fell in love with a falafel wrap on the mean streets of London.  OK, they weren’t so mean (well… where we lived kinda was… pit bulls and trackies… Londoners you know what I am talking about..) but there was a food cart on Whitecross Street just north of the Barbican that made these amazing falafel pitas.  It was there that I learned falafels don’t have to be hard crumbly balls.  Then we moved, and I fell into a falafel pita withdrawal depression…

Until I heard about Restaurant Sumac opening up on Notre-Dame in St-Henri.  I thought this just might be what I was looking for.  In fact, I was so enthusiastic I showed up on their third day of opening.

And promptly ordered the menu…

Ok I didn’t really, but I got the muhammara with amazing soft, fluffy warm pita and a side salad of fried aubergines.  I really loved the fried aubergines at first but after a little bit found the preserved lemon (?) a bit overwhelming.

The falafel pita was gorgeous.  The size looks intimidating but the falafels are airy and the whole thing can be squished down.  The bottom is filled with crunchy delicious fresh vegetables and the bread is so soft.

I ran into a couple friends there who were trying their combo plates:

Restaurant Sumac Interior

Restaurant Sumac MenuThe interior is pretty large and spacious with high airy ceilings and woodwork throughout.  There is definitely room for strollers, and I would say this place is pretty kid friendly too.

I showed up during the soft opening, and already the place was pretty rocking.  Currently they are only open for lunch but check out their website and they may be open for dinner soon.

Go people!

Decor: Unexpectedly nice.  Airy and spacious.

Service: We arrived early but our food arrived very quickly and was followed up with table service (topping up of water, etc.)

Prices: I thought it was reasonable.  If you go crazy like me it adds up but get yourself a platter and you’ll be good.

Food: All of us at the table loved it.  It was fresh, fluffy, and yummy.

Good For: Lunch with friends, kiddos, takeaway.  I believe in the future they will be open for dinner too.

Baby Friendly: Yes!  And if you are breastfeeding, it’s not spicy (well at least the stuff we got anyways).  There’s lots of room for strollers and if you can’t hang around it’s pretty quick.  I did not check out bathroom facilities, but I wouldn’t expect to see a change table.

  1. I really enjoyed the falafel plate, but I agree with you about the preserved lemons in the eggplant dip: too much. I find preserved lemon can be really overwhelming. I think I would have preferred pomegranate or pomegranate molasses in the dip 😉
