Petit Lapin – New Allergen Free Bakery in Westmount

My child doesn’t have any food allergies except it seems to fish.  We fed him salmon a couple times and it was pretty much a barf-fest afterwards, but that was the end of his reaction.

This is in direct contrast to a few of my friends whose children have severe allergies.  I can’t even imagine what it must be like watching your child eat with other kids, hoping he won’t steal a piece of bread or gobble down a piece of cheese.  Birthday parties must be a bit of a nightmare.

It seems I’m not alone.  Viviane Nguyen’s son has food allergies but wanted she still wanted him to have a cake for his first birthday.  After fruitless searching, no one could offer her an allergen free cake and she made her own.  After realizing she could make all sorts of sweet allergen-free treats she decided to open up Petit Lapin.

Petit Lapin is a special, colourful, kid friendly bakery located on Victoria in Westmount where all treats are free of the top 10 food allergens:

  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Soy
  • Wheat and gluten
  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts
  • Fish and seafood
  • Sesame
  • Sulfites
  • Mustard

As a bonus, all products are also organic and vegan.

The menu reads pretty sweet – cupcakes, donuts, cream puffs, and macarons are all for sale.  They can also cater to all sorts of events so that no one has to worry about allergens.

I managed to stop by and tried out 3 different mini-cupcakes, and a donut.  The icing was much softer than I thought it would be and the cakes were moist.  My favourite was the raspberry cupcake, followed by the chocolate.

Decor: Cute – white and pastels.  This place is really just a small take away bakery though, so don’t expect huge open spaces.  This is strictly take away – there are no tables.

Service: Well, when I went I was the only one in line (a Wednesday at 2:00 a couple weeks after they had opened) so service was great for me!

Prices: A regular cupcake is $3.95 and a mini is $1.95 (see their menu here).  This seems to be slightly more (as in coin change) than the average in Montreal (I compared to two downtown bakeries).

Food: I didn’t really know what to expect, but considering it is allergen/dairy/free it’s pretty good.  I have to say that the only one I didn’t really like was the red velvet cupcake.  The rest was pretty good.

Good for: Vegans and people with allergies!

Baby Friendly: Well, there is a pretty steep set of stairs to get down to the bakery, so hauling a mega stroller down there might be a bit of a challenge.  Once you get down there isn’t tons of room to manoeuvre.  But, I brought my energetic two year old, and he had fun looking at the cupcakes on display.
