I was recently invited to the Old Montreal restaurant Bocata to sample their new fall menu.  I’d heard about Bocata before, and was looking forward to a wonderful evening of food and conversation.

Bocata is an extremely warm and cozy restaurant located along Montreal’s beautiful rue St. Paul.  The new fall menu features all sorts of wonderful items and we were going to try the chef’s picks that evening.

We started with the Pata Negra Iberico followed by one of my favourites, the Duck & Arugula salad (shown above).  This featured smoked duck confit, pancetta, apple vinaigrette & walnut praline, and 25 year old Jerez vinegar.  This was followed by the standout dish of the evening, a lobster lasagna (shown below).  Unfortunately, this dish is not on the fall menu but lobster is featured in one of the dishes.  We also were lucky enough to try the Guinea Fowl & Season Mushrooms au vin jaune, Artic Char, and the Brownie Maison.  It was all very tasty, and beautifully presented.

The chef, Benjamin Léonard, was obviously very passionate about his food and took great pride in telling us in detail where the meat was sourced and describing the dishes.  He draws from the Jura, Corsica, Périgord and Lyon regions in France for inspiration, and the menu is both simple and refined.  The wines selected for each dish were well chosen, and very interesting.  The wines are mostly private importation and the focus is on small producers.  Every evening more than 30 wines are available by the glass and half-glass and the large majority are organic and/or pesticide free.  I encourage you to go and try the menu yourself!
