Brit and Chips is a stand out amongst fish and chip shops.  Great food, excellent service and a cozy little restaurant all results in a very enjoyable experience.

Excellent

Brit and Chips is an amazing fish and chip shop located in Old Montreal with a decidedly British outlook.  At Brit and Chips not only do they provide you with four types of fish and chips, but they also have a selection of  pasties, pies, sausage rolls and even the dreaded scotch egg.  And for all those Brits craving their favourite Walkers Crisps, they have a selection of that too.

The restaurant I suppose has a British feel, but frankly it’s about a thousand times nicer than any fish and chip shop I’ve been to in London (think greasy spoons).  It was difficult to tell if the area which was located next door also belonged to Brit and Chips (and I should have asked) as it was closed.  If not, this is a small restaurant indeed with some counter space and a few chairs for 2 people in the back (my pictures pretty much tell the whole story).  I think there was one table for four in the entire place.

The service is friendly and efficient.  There are four types of fish to choose from, and we sampled the cod with a traditional beer batter and the haddock with a maple syrup batter.  The batter on the cod was crispy and not too overwhelming.  The maple syrup batter had a distinct taste of maple but was thinner and not quite as crunchy.  The fries were chunky and well seasoned.  The tartar sauce was amazing as well, and the portions were large but not disgusting.  The fish is offered in a portion of two.  This means that you actually get more fish and larger pieces than the traditional slab of fish in London which overflows on either side of your plate.  And the price is right at $11 for any of the fish and chip meals.

I had to convince my partner to head with me to Brit and Chips for lunch.  I adore fish and chips, whereas he always thought of it as greasy, large and just a lot of batter.  However, in the end he was raving to me and to our server about how great the place was declaring it his favourite fish and chips ever.

One little note though, we did go to this place on a rather dead Monday afternoon over the holidays.  I have no idea what this place would be like on a busy day.

Decor: Trendy and Traditional
Service: Friendly without being annoying
Price: Excellent considering the table service and quality of fish
Food: Very good – some of the best fish and chips I’ve had (and I’ve had a lot!)
Good For: This isn’t really a stay and linger type of place so I’d say a quick lunch or dinner with a friend.  And, I really mean a friend.  More than 2 people and the seating could get tricky.

    Bonjour,

Nous étions exposant à l’octobierfest cet Automne et nous voulions savoir si nous pouvons faire la location de votre kiosque (avec votre personel) pour notre journée de mariage?

Je crois qu’il y a erreur. Je n’étais pas au octobierefest.
